Join us on our ice fishing trip to Lake Winnipeg as we chased greenbacks for the first time. It was such a thrill pulling these big fish out of the hole - they were nothing like we expected! TACTICS: Rattle Baits and Set Line The rattle baits seem to trigger these fish over the set lines - bringing in schools and instead of hitting the minnow, most of the time if you caught their attention, they would hit the rap over the minnow! ONE SPOT, PATIENCE: We did the opposite of everything we heard about chasing greenbacks. After finding a school of bigger fish roaming, we decided to post up all day and let them come to us...and it worked! But keep those rattle baits going- When they're roaming, you need to have something to draw them in. The water is heavily stained but we didn't move and it paid off with some big fish on the top side of the ice! It was a successful trip up to Red Lake this early ice season! Lots of quality fish caught using a variety of tactics. We were able to stay away from pressure as most of the crowds were fishing that 8-10ft range, we ventured out as far as we could on the ATV and were able to catch a number of 16in+ walleyes in that 11.5 ft - 12ft range. Depth: 11.5 ft - 12 ft Tactics: Set Lines Shiners produced the most fish and the largest fish (24in walleye) We used just a small plain orange hook and they seemed to love it Jigging Jigging Rap - Purple/Pink (with rattles) Glow Jig tipped with minnow head (specifically Fish Daddy LED Spoon)
